SEO for Accountants
Referrals do not scale and they do not let you choose the client. Search does both.
Most practices grow on word of mouth until the day the referrals dry up or arrive as the wrong sort of client. SEO for accountants is how you fix the mix: pages for the services you want to sell, content for the niches you want to serve, and a local profile that actually surfaces when someone searches for an accountant in your town.
Why SEO for accountants is a niche game
There are a lot of accountants and almost all of them describe themselves identically. Undifferentiated practices compete on price; specialised ones do not.
"Accountant near me" attracts the cheapest client
Generic local searches are dominated by people shopping on price for a simple self assessment. Ranking there is easy and largely worthless. Ranking for "accountant for contractors" or "accountant for dentists" is harder and vastly more profitable.
The big platforms have taken the bottom of the market
Fixed-fee online accountants have absorbed the simplest work and outrank everyone on the generic terms. A local practice competes on specialism, advice and proximity, not on being another option for a £150 tax return.
Every service is a different search and a different buyer
Self assessment, limited company accounts, VAT, payroll, bookkeeping, R and D claims and business advisory are searched by completely different people at different price points. One "Services" page serves none of them.
Trust signals are unusually heavy in finance
ICAEW, ACCA or AAT status, professional indemnity, named partners and clear fee structures matter more here than in most local sectors, and Google's quality guidelines for financial content reflect that.
What we actually do for an accountancy practice
Five workstreams, aimed at better clients rather than more of them.
Pick and own a niche
Contractors, landlords, e-commerce sellers, tradespeople, dental or medical practices, hospitality. We build the pages and content that make you the obvious choice for one or two of these instead of the fortieth general practice in town.
A page per service, priced honestly
Self assessment, limited company accounts, VAT returns, payroll, bookkeeping, company formation, business advisory. Each with its own page, fee guidance and enquiry route, written for you.
Google Business Profile and the local pack
Correct categories, services listed individually, opening hours, and a review routine. For a practice with an office this is real phone calls, and it is nearly always half configured.
Content on the questions clients actually ask
Whether to go limited, what dividends cost in tax, when to register for VAT, what Making Tax Digital means for a landlord. This is the searching people do before they choose an accountant, and it is how you get chosen.
Reviews and credentials as a system
Request routine timed around the annual cycle, responses handled, and professional body status and PI cover presented as proof rather than footer decoration.

Most practices start on Local
One office, one town, the full service set and a niche. Local covers it. Practices selling a specialism nationally, such as contractor or e-commerce accounting, want Regional or National. See Regional and National.

Nobody hands over their company books to a practice whose website looks abandoned. If your site is dated, unclear about fees, or silent on your specialism, fix the build first and the ranking work compounds on top of it.

How long does SEO for an accountancy practice take?+
Map pack improvements can show in two to six weeks. Service and niche pages typically take three to six months to settle. Niche terms are usually faster than generic ones because the competition is thinner, which is one reason we push practices towards them.
Should we really pick a niche?+
You do not have to turn work away. You do have to be findable as something specific, because "local accountant" is a crowded, price-led search. A practice that owns "accountant for contractors" in its region wins better clients with less effort than one competing on the generic term.
Can we rank against the big online accountants?+
Not for the broad generic terms, and chasing them is a waste of budget. Local intent and niche specialism are both winnable, and both bring higher value clients than the terms those platforms dominate.
What does it cost?+
Local is £300 a month with no upfront build fee. Regional is £1,500 a month and suits practices selling a specialism beyond their own town. The website build is included in both.
Do you write the content, including the technical tax pieces?+
We write the drafts and you review them for technical accuracy before publication, which usually takes a partner twenty minutes a page. Tax content that is wrong is worse than no content, so the review step is not optional.
Do you work with practices outside Bristol?+
Yes. Built in Bristol, working with businesses across the South West and beyond.
