SEO for Therapists

The directories rank because they publish constantly. You can rank for your own specialism if the pages exist.

Search results for therapy are dominated by large directories, which is why so many therapists conclude that search is not worth trying. It is winnable, but only on specific ground: your town, your modality and the specific difficulty someone is searching for.

The problem

Why therapy SEO looks harder than it is

The broad terms are lost. The specific ones are wide open, and they are the ones that actually bring the right client.

Directories own the generic terms

Counselling Directory and Psychology Today have enormous domains and thousands of profiles. You will not outrank them for "therapist" plus a large city, and trying is a waste of a budget.

Specialism plus place is winnable

"Trauma therapist [town]", "EMDR [town]", "couples counselling [town]", "ADHD assessment support". These are lower volume, far higher intent, and most local therapists have no page for any of them.

Health content is judged strictly

Therapy sits in Google's Your Money or Your Life category. Named practitioner, registration number, modality training and reviewed dates are not decoration, they are ranking factors.

Online work changes the geography

If you work online, your market is national and your content strategy should be too. Most therapists still write as though every client will drive to the room.

The build

What we actually do for a therapy practice

Five workstreams, focused on the ground you can actually win.

01

Specialism pages that match how people search

Written around the difficulty, not the modality label, because people search "how to stop panic attacks" long before they search "CBT". Each specialism gets its own page with its own enquiry route.

02

Local visibility where you have a room

Google Business Profile set up correctly for a practice that may not want a public address, plus location pages for the areas you genuinely draw from.

03

Content for the pre-enquiry phase

What therapy actually involves, how to choose a therapist, what different modalities do, how long it usually takes. People read for weeks before they make contact and this is where they decide who to contact.

04

Credential and trust signals

Registration, supervision, insurance, training and modality presented clearly, both for readers and for the quality signals search engines look for in health content.

05

National reach for online practice

Where you work online, we build for the whole country rather than one town, which changes the keyword targets and usually the plan you need.

The demand is already there

Recommended plan

Most private practices start on Local

One practice, one town, specialism pages and local visibility, at £300 a month. Therapists working online across the country want Regional or National. See Regional and National.

Local

£300/mo

Leave anytime. Buy the site outright for £5,000 whenever you like.

For therapists, the website usually comes first

This is the one sector where we would normally tell you to start with the build. Ranking work has nothing to convert against if the site does not explain your approach, your fee and what the first session is like.

FAQs

Therapy SEO questions we get asked

Can I outrank Counselling Directory or Psychology Today?+

Not for broad terms, and we will not take money to try. For specialism plus location terms, and for the specific difficulties people actually type, an individual practice can rank well because almost nobody has built those pages.

How long does it take?+

Specialism pages in a smaller town can move within two to three months because the competition is thin. City-level terms take longer. It is a slower, quieter compounding effect than in an emergency trade.

I work online only. Does local SEO apply?+

Less so, and that changes the strategy considerably. Online practice competes nationally on specialism, which means more content and usually the Regional or National plan rather than Local.

What does it cost?+

Local is £300 a month with no upfront build fee. Regional is £1,500 a month and suits national online practice. The website build is included in both.

Can you use client testimonials?+

Very carefully, and often not at all. Professional body guidance around testimonials in therapy is strict and client confidentiality comes first. We build trust through credentials, clarity and useful content instead.

Do you work with therapists outside Bristol?+

Yes. Built in Bristol, working with practitioners across the South West and beyond, and nationally where the practice is online.

No payment. No call. No pitch.
