SEO for Gyms

The budget chains outspend you on everything except local relevance. That is the ground to fight on.

"Gym near me" is decided in the map results, and the chains have deep pockets and hundreds of locations. What they cannot do is write genuinely local content about classes, coaches and community. That is where an independent gym or studio wins.

The problem

Why gym SEO is a fight against chains

You are competing with national brands who have budget and domain authority. You have specificity, and specificity wins the searches that matter.

The map pack decides "gym near me"

Three results, a photo, a review score and opening hours. Proximity matters, but so do categories, review velocity and how complete your profile is, and the chains often neglect the individual site profiles.

Class type searches are wide open

"Spin classes [town]", "beginners yoga [town]", "strength training for over 50s", "personal trainer near me". Chains rarely build pages for these at site level. You can.

January is won in October

The joining spike is enormous and completely predictable. Content published in autumn ranks in time for it; content published on 2 January does not.

Reviews carry more weight here than almost anywhere

Gym choice is heavily social proof driven, and recent reviews with real detail about coaches and classes move the map pack more than a lifetime score that stopped growing.

The build

What we actually do for a gym

Five workstreams, aimed at the joining decision.

01

Google Business Profile, run properly

Correct categories, services and classes listed individually, accurate hours including bank holidays, current photos of the actual space, and the Q and A seeded with the questions beginners ask.

02

A page per class and service

Spin, yoga, HIIT, strength, personal training, beginner programmes, rehab and over 50s. Each with its own page, timetable slot and trial route.

03

Local and community content

Coaches, member community, local events and partnerships. This is the content the chains structurally cannot produce and it is what makes an independent gym rank for the searches that convert.

04

Seasonal planning

January, spring and September intakes planned and published months ahead so the pages are ranking before the demand arrives rather than after it.

05

Reviews on a system

Requests timed around milestones rather than sign-up, responses handled, and monthly velocity reporting.

The demand is already there

Recommended plan

Single site gyms start on Local

One site, one town, the full class set and the map pack, at £300 a month with nothing upfront. Multi-site operators want Regional. See Regional and National.

Local

£300/mo

Leave anytime. Buy the site outright for £5,000 whenever you like.

Ranking is wasted if the timetable is a photo

Most gyms we look at could double their conversion without a single extra visitor, simply by publishing prices, fixing the timetable and shortening the trial signup. If that is your situation, start with the build.

FAQs

Gym SEO questions we get asked

Can an independent gym outrank the big chains?+

In the map results, often yes, because ranking there depends heavily on proximity, profile completeness and recent reviews rather than pure brand budget. For national brand terms, no, and there is no reason to try.

How long does it take?+

Google Business Profile work can move map positions in two to six weeks. Class and service pages usually take two to four months. If you are aiming at the January intake, start in autumn.

What does SEO for gyms cost?+

Local is £300 a month with no upfront build fee for a single site. Regional is £1,500 a month for multi-site operators. The website build is included.

We get most joins through Instagram. Does search matter?+

Social brings people who already know you exist. Search brings people who have decided to join a gym and are choosing between three. They are different audiences and the second one converts faster.

Do class pages really need to be separate?+

Yes. "Beginners yoga [town]" and "spin classes [town]" are distinct searches with distinct intent, and a timetable page cannot rank for either. Separate pages also give you somewhere useful to send social traffic.

Do you work outside Bristol?+

Yes. Built in Bristol, working with businesses across the South West and beyond.

No payment. No call. No pitch.
