SEO for Plumbers
Emergency plumbing is a three-result search. If you are not in the map pack, you are not in the job.
Nobody scrolls when water is coming through a ceiling. They tap one of the top three map results and ring it. SEO for plumbers is mostly the unglamorous work of winning that box: profile, proximity, reviews and a page for every job type you want to be called about.
Why plumbing SEO is won and lost in the map pack
Plumbing is the clearest example of an emergency-intent trade. The search happens under pressure, on a phone, and the decision takes seconds.
The click goes to the map, not the website
For "emergency plumber" and "plumber near me", the three map results and the call button take most of the traffic. A beautifully optimised website ranking fourth organically sits below all of it.
Directories are eating your enquiries
Checkatrade, MyBuilder and Rated People outrank most independent plumbers for their own service terms, then charge you to appear on them and sell the same lead to three competitors. Ranking directly is the only way out of that loop.
Every job type is a separate search
Boiler repair, boiler installation, blocked drains, leak detection, bathroom fitting, power flushing and emergency callout are seven searches with different values. A single "Services" page competes for none of them.
Review velocity beats review total
Google weights recent reviews heavily for local results. Forty reviews that stopped two years ago look worse than twelve from the last three months, and most plumbers have the former.
What we actually do for a plumbing business
Five workstreams, run every month. Not a report about them.
Google Business Profile, rebuilt properly
Correct category, every service listed individually, service area set to the towns you genuinely cover, real job photos rather than stock, and the Q and A seeded. This is the fastest lever in the whole discipline and it is nearly always half done.
Local pack and service area work
Consistent name, address and phone number across the directories that matter, plus a page for each town you actually work in. Not fifty thin location pages, which Google discounts, but the handful you can genuinely serve within the hour.
A page per job type
Boiler repair, boiler replacement, blocked drains, leak detection, emergency callout, bathroom installation. Each with its own page, its own call-out charge information and its own enquiry route, written for you.
Content that catches the pre-emergency search
What a boiler fault code means, why a radiator is cold at the top, what a leak repair typically costs. People search these before they ring anyone, and being the answer is how you become the call.
Reviews on a system
A request that goes out automatically after a completed job, a response routine, and monthly reporting on review velocity so it never quietly stalls again.
What plumbing businesses get searched for
UK monthly search volumes, DataForSEO, August 2026. Trades searchers lead with SEO terms rather than website terms, which tells you where the pain is.

We do not publish invented case studies. Real anonymised numbers are shared as they land, never before.
Most plumbing firms start on Local
One town and the surrounding villages, the full job type set and the map pack. Local covers it. Firms covering a whole county or running multiple vans across regions want Regional. See Regional and National.

Half the plumbers we look at rank reasonably and still lose the job, because the site takes six seconds to load on 4G and the phone number is three scrolls down. If that sounds familiar, start with the build.

How long before SEO brings in plumbing jobs?+
Google Business Profile work can move map pack positions within two to six weeks, which for an emergency trade is where most of the value sits. Organic rankings for boiler and installation terms usually take three to six months. Anyone promising faster is describing paid ads.
Is this better than Checkatrade or Rated People?+
It is a different model. Directories sell you a lead that has also gone to two competitors, every month, forever. Ranking your own profile and site means the enquiry arrives directly and the asset belongs to you. Most plumbers we speak to want to reduce directory spend rather than eliminate it overnight, and that is a reasonable plan.
Do I need a website at all if the map pack drives the calls?+
Yes, because the map pack is partly ranked on your website. Google reads your service pages to work out what you do and where. Profiles with a thin or missing website struggle to hold a top three position against competitors who have both.
What does SEO for plumbers cost?+
Our Local plan is £300 a month with no upfront build fee, covering one town and its surrounding area. Regional is £1,500 a month for county-wide or multi-region coverage. The website build is included, not invoiced separately.
We are booked out already. Why bother?+
Being booked out on low-value emergency callouts is not the same as being booked out on bathroom installations and boiler replacements. Job type pages let you rank for the work you want more of rather than taking whatever the phone brings.
Do you only work with Bristol plumbers?+
No. We are built in Bristol and work with businesses across the South West and beyond. The local pack work is tied to your own service area wherever that is.
